WOMEN'S RING SIZE GUIDE

Women's ring size guide

Ring size for women uses the same scale as men's sizing, US, UK, EU, India, Japan, and China all convert the same way. What's different is the typical range, and a few fit questions that come up more often: stacking, resizing limits on set stones, and how pregnancy changes finger size temporarily.

Average ring size for women

Typical range

5 – 8

US size

Most common size

US 6 – 7

≈ 16.5–17.3mm diameter

Common band width

1.5 – 4mm

Engagement and fashion rings tend to be narrower

US 6 to 7 is the most common ring size women order at most major US retailers, but it's a sales pattern, not a rule, plenty of people fall well outside it.

Average middle finger ring size for women

The middle finger typically runs slightly larger than the ring finger on the same hand, commonly around US 6.5 to 7.5 for women, though this varies as much as any other finger measurement does. If you're buying a midi ring or a statement piece for the middle finger specifically, measure that finger directly rather than assuming it matches a ring-finger size you already know.

Resizing limits on engagement rings

Most jewelers can resize a plain band up or down about two sizes safely. Rings with pavé stones set into the shank, eternity bands, or very thin bands have less room, sometimes half a size in either direction, since resizing stretches or compresses the metal around the stones. If you're buying an engagement ring and the size is a guess, it's worth measuring carefully now rather than relying on a resize later.

Stacking multiple rings

If you plan to wear a wedding band and engagement ring together, or stack several thin rings on one finger, measure with a similar amount of "stuff" already on the finger, or size each ring slightly looser than you would a single standalone ring. Two snug rings side by side will feel tighter than either measured alone.

Pregnancy and temporary swelling

Finger size can increase noticeably during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimester, and usually returns to normal a few months after. If you're pregnant and need a ring now, many people size for comfort during pregnancy and plan to resize afterward, rather than sizing for a pre-pregnancy measurement that won't fit for months.

Women's ring sizes at a glance

These are the sizes most women's rings fall into, with the matching inner diameter and circumference. If your measurement lands between two rows, the half size is usually the better choice than rounding down.

Ring size by finger

Fingers on the same hand are different sizes, so a ring size only applies to the finger it was measured on. These are common patterns rather than fixed rules:

  • Ring finger: the reference most people know.
  • Middle finger: usually the same size or slightly larger than the ring finger.
  • Index finger: often close to the ring finger, sometimes a little larger.
  • Little finger: usually several sizes smaller than the ring finger.
  • Thumb: usually several sizes larger than the ring finger.

Your dominant hand is often slightly larger than the other. The safest approach is always to measure the exact finger and hand the ring is meant for.

Engagement rings, wedding bands and fashion rings

Engagement and wedding bands for women are commonly 1.5 mm to 4 mm wide, which is narrow enough that width rarely changes the size you should choose. Fashion and cocktail rings are different. A wide shank, a large stone or a broad top can make a ring feel tighter, and a top-heavy ring that is slightly loose may spin so the stone ends up facing sideways.

If a ring has a large setting, try it on at your usual size and consider a ring guard or sizing bead to keep it centered.

Half sizes, thin bands and stacking

Thin bands fit like your measured size, so choose the nearest half size. Stacked rings behave like one wide band, so two or three together usually need a slightly looser fit than any single ring would. If you plan to wear an engagement ring and a wedding band together, size them as a pair and try them on together.

The wide band sizing guide explains why stacks and wide rings feel tighter.

When to measure again

Your size is not fixed for life. Many people notice changes with the seasons, with weight changes, during pregnancy, and gradually with age as the knuckles broaden. If a ring that used to fit has become tight or loose, measure again before buying anything new. Our guide to why your ring size changes explains what moves the number and the best time of day to measure.

Buying as a gift

If you are buying for someone else, see how to find a partner's ring size without spoiling the surprise, and check the seller's resizing policy first. For rings that are hard to resize, the resizing guide explains what is and is not possible.

Women's ring size questions

What is the average ring size for women?

Most women's rings are sold between US 5 and 8, and sizes 6 and 7 are the most common at many retailers. Individual sizes vary widely.

What size is a typical pinky or thumb ring?

A pinky ring is usually several sizes smaller than your ring finger size, and a thumb ring several sizes larger. Measure the finger directly instead of guessing.

Should I choose the larger size when I am between two?

For most everyday rings, yes. A slightly loose ring is easier to live with than a tight one, and a ring guard can take up slack. For a ring with a large stone, test for spinning.

Can I resize an engagement ring later?

Often, but not always. Plain bands can usually be resized about one to two sizes, while eternity bands and rings with stones set into the shank have much less room. See the resizing guide.
